Gun laws are a hot-button topic these days, with people on both sides of the issue vehemently arguing their points. In this blog series, we will explore the realities of gun ownership and gun violence from a variety of angles. So far, we have looked at the history of gun control in the U.S., as well as the Second Amendment. In this article, we will discuss why gun laws are so controversial and whether or not they actually work. We hope you enjoy reading this series as much as we have enjoyed writing it!
Background
In the wake of the Charleston church shooting, which left nine people dead, there has been renewed discussion about gun control and access to firearms. The National Rifle Association (NRA) is one of the most powerful lobbying groups in America, and it seems like they aren’t going to be dissuaded from their mission any time soon. The NRA has already released a statement saying that they do not support any kind of gun control legislation and that “gun-free zones” make people more vulnerable to attacks.
The NRA isn’t the only organization with this stance. The Guns Save Lives Foundation is a nonprofit organization that focuses on firearm safety education and training. They argue that universal background checks would not have prevented the Charleston shooting because Dylann Roof, the perpetrator, did not have a criminal record. Instead, they say that he should have been denied purchase of a gun because he was on federal watch list at the time.
Gun control advocates argue that stricter laws would make it harder for criminals to get hold of guns, and would also help keep innocent people safe. However, it’s unlikely that Congress will pass any kind of gun control legislation in response to the Charleston shooting. In fact, there are already several states with more restrictive gun laws than South Carolina, and yet Roof still managed to acquire a weapon.
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The Good:
1. Gun laws are changing across the country, making it easier for law abiding citizens to own firearms.
2. The popularity of gun shows and shooting ranges is on the rise, meaning there’s more opportunity to learn about guns and get certified to use them safely.
3. There are a growing number of online retailers that offer firearms without requiring a background check or providing any safety training.
The Bad:
1. Violence in the media has a negative impact on attitudes towards guns, leading some people to believe that all guns are bad and should be banned.
2. Shooting accidents are common, especially when new shooters try out their new firearms for the first time.
3. A significant percentage of criminal gun seizures originate from private transactions between individuals who know each other well enough not to require a background check.
Conclusion
It’s been a long time since we’ve had any news about the Have Gun, Will Travel complete series being released on DVD. Rumors have been swirling for years now, with new reports suggesting that MGM is unhappy with the show’s low viewership and would rather not release the series at all than to fund a DVD release. If you’re a fan of the show and would like to see it finally made available on DVD, please let your voice be heard! You might just be able to persuade MGM to change their mind and give us all our favorite Western episodes in one place.
