The National Park Service (NPS) is an agency within the United States Department of the Interior that manages America’s national parks. Established on August 25, 1916, the NPS was created to preserve unique natural and cultural resources for the public. The NPS employs more than 20,000 employees and operates 432 national parks across the country. In 2016, the NPS generated revenue of $2.8 billion.

The National Park System began as a series of historic sites managed by the Bureau of Public Land Management (BLM). In 1898, President William McKinley signed into law a bill creating the BPL. The bureau was charged with managing federal lands in order to conserve their natural resources and provide recreational opportunities for Americans.

In 1902, Theodore Roosevelt became president and quickly made change to the BLM. One of his first actions was to create a new division called the National Park Service within the BPL. Roosevelt believed that protecting nature should be accessible to everyone and not just wealthy landowners.

Under Roosevelt’s leadership, Congress passed several laws that helped shape the National Park System we have today. The most important of these laws was the Antiquities Act of 1906 which allowed presidents to designate protected areas without approval from Congress. This allowed Roosevelt to create many iconic national parks such as Mount Olympus in Wyoming and Devils Tower in Wyoming Territory.
